As a change strategists, we work to get you following through on an idea.
But sometimes it’s hard to decide on which idea to launch.
Not every idea is follow-through worthy. So how do you pick which one to pursue? I spoke to Gene Hayden, author of the book, The Follow-Through Factor for a good tip.
As Gene described in her book, she toyed with getting into cake catering. But truth is she realized that she has the patience of a flea and that does not make for a good baker. That picture of cake you see … it’s a beautiful thing, but it’s certainly not hers.
Gene says “You can’t make an idea fit someone you’re not. Think of ideas more like eyeglass frames. Some frames are fun, others attractive, but not all are the right look for you.
When do you know if the idea is one you want to wear? When if you don’t wear it, you’d always apologize to yourself, for yourself. When the idea alone makes you feel nostalgic for it– if you didn’t have it, you’d miss it, even before you work on it.”
Tell Gene that she’ll never even try to start a cake company, and she’ll just laugh. It won’t hit her hard.
“But tell me, “I can guarantee you’ll never write another book, or never get to Chile.” Now that’s another story!” says Gene.
“That makes me feel like someone just turned off a light somewhere. And I need to prove them wrong so I can switch it back on.”
When giving up the idea is like saying goodbye to a really good friend, and you are just not prepared to do that…then you’ve got an idea that you need to follow-through on, no matter what.
