Losing at Negotiating? Top 6 Tips To Win

Losing at negotiating? Top 6 Tips To Win

For starters, check out these 6 tips that pros use:

1. Know when to hold and when to fold

Before you even begin, get clear with yourself on what you’re willing to budge on, and what you won’t. This is key because we tend to agree to things in the moment that we wouldn’t otherwise, especially if the other person is skilled at negotiating. So keep this info close to your chest, but know it.

2. Build in some wiggle room

Aim a little higher so there’s room to maneuver. It’s seen as more of a win/win for both sides when you engage in a bit of back and forth before agreeing to the final decision.

3. Make the first move

The more you talk about what you want and why, the more likely you are to get it. If possible, take the lead and get your proposal in first. We’re often overly influenced by the first proposal on the table so try to open negotiations with your request.

4. Stay calm and confident

Don’t allow your emotions to control you. Even the most confident people feel awkward and nervous when negotiating; they’re probably just doing a better job of hiding it.

5. Don’t give up at the first ‘no.’

If you hear a ‘no,’ view it as your invitation to ask more questions, be more creative, and suggest more solutions.

Remember when life shuts a door, open it again. It’s a door – that’s how they work.We may not even realize it, but we’re always negotiating for something. Could be for a pay raise or just what to binge on Netflix. Knowing how to negotiate is a key life skill and you can learn to be better at it than most.

6. Prep

Time spent on research is time well spent. The idea is to try and anticipate what will influence the other party.
